About this deal

They eventually arrive at a vast megastructure where they meet an alien species, called 'Fountainheads'. The encounter with the benevolent aliens improves the colonists' situation dramatically. The alien presence is played poorly by Svetlana who loses control of the colony to Bella. Bella does not exile Svetlana, even if she chooses a form of self-exile. Of the three distinctive parts of this epic, the first - dealing with an industrial spaceship chasing after a rogue satelite - reminded me of the movie "Armaggedon" with Bruce Willis. Diamond in the rough miners, dubious mega corporation interests, self sacrifice and mysterious accidents flavor this action thriller part of Pushing Ice. I think I was supposed to care deeply about the fate of Reynold's characters, but while I enjoyed the ride I remained detached. Probably because I didn't find the story all that original. The conflict between the two main characters (both women) is the highlight of these human interrelations; a bit to the extreme (I’m still ruminating in my head whether I like or hate Svetlana), but those are no ordinary circumstances they are dealing with.

ABSOLUTION GAP (2003) BSFA shortlist. End times approach; religious lunatics appear. Contains moving cathedrals and speculation about braneworlds. TERMINAL WORLD (2010) Wales Book of the Year finalist. Steampunky action on a dying world, with a mystery under the skin of things. Wow. This is amazing. It's been recommended on this sub loads. I generally like Reynolds, but I really didn't love Absolution Gap. Pushing Ice, as a title, leaves a lot to be desired. It seems... rather pedestrian for what it actually IS. First let me state where I'm coming from... There is an interaction between the world and the protagonists - a kind of two-way street that puts constraints as to what each can do - if the world is not built to a sufficient degree of detail, it will come out in the characters and what they do.I've been known to suggest that Reynolds's novels are a bit too long, and this one is as long as his others, but I

Although it’s pretty static in action, its scope is as colossal as we got used to. And we get some really interesting alien species as well. Pushing Ice' will be one of the most unusual generation sagas most readers have ever encountered. Hint: Einstein's Theory of Relativity is involved...

in the sense of being fairly near future technological speculation, and others "big" in the sense of dealing with The ideas for the series were really interesting, but I wish a LOT more had been explained, and a lot more questions had been answered. It's hard to even compare how the different "cultures" are tech wise to each other. Like the peak of human technology was completely negated by a random "Lel trolled u, just a prank bruh" prank from the Musk Dogs? So I guess peak humanity was just at the same level / below the others? Who knows, not us! Except . . .they apparently somehow destroyed an entire Spica booster which was ridiculously big and likely just as durable as the one that it took a Janus explosion to make a small hole in? Huh? The main assumption with Reynolds' work (as far as I can see) is that his humans are mainly based on the humans we are all too familiar with. This works for his Revelation Space series because he assumes humans make their homes to fit around their standard way of being. Which I suspect is the secret of the success of this series. The development of the plot from beginning to end is quite broad in scope, and Mr. Reynolds doesn't slow down to spoon feed every portion of the the plot which I enjoyed. There are a couple of lulls in the story when new events are being set up that dragged by comparison to other parts, but they were by no means boring. the chops to take cool ideas and reveal them via action plots, often hiding the really neat ideas convincingly until the end.
