About this deal

The Micro G Foam midsole adds a nice level of responsiveness to this shoe’s performance or jumping and the TriBase tech in the outsole help give this shoe a balanced and stable feel when doing single-leg training.

The outsole of this model is one the main construction features really worth noting. This shoe’s outsole features UA’s TriBase construction, which is so important it’s in the name of the model. In UA’s press release they state that the TriBase technology allows the foot to maneuver with ease through three areas of flexibility. There are flex grooves around the toe that promote upward and downward movement, while the TriBase sides are supposed to help with torsional flexion. UA TriBase Reign Outsole The TriBase outsole provides a nice grip level of traction on wooden platforms, rubber gym floors, and machines, so I don’t think traction will be an issue for you regarding general weight lifting and strength training. However, for notably wide feet, I would suggest passing on all of these models because I’m not convinced you’ll have enough room through the toe box and midfoot in these shoes.

My Favorite Cross-Training Shoes Picks

For daily wear, both of these shoes can technically work, but you may want to actually pass on using either of them for day-to-day use if you want to get out of your investment. The Dropset Trainer 2s features a 6mm heel-to-toe drop. I like this heel-to-toe drop for lifting, and I think it’s a nice in-between drop for most lifters who don’t want to train with a flat foot or overly elevated heel. Best for Men On top of this, I find the Lift and Run chassis system to give this model a little more “pop” when doing explosive training. Whether I was doing broad jumps, skater strides, or agility work, I enjoyed how responsive the Nano X3 felt. Regarding lifting thresholds, I’ve squatted 405 lbs in the TriBase Reign 5 and they provided enough stability for that task. These shoes also felt solid for clean and power cleans at 255 lbs and were stable enough for 500-plus lb deadlifts. But heavy lifts are where the Under Armour TriBase Reign 5 really comes alive and you will most appreciate the shoe. It feels like every aspect of the shoe really comes together in perfect harmony at the bottom of your heavy squats.

This will provide enough room to avoid jamming the toes excessively in every workout while also not making them too loose to where you experience heel slip. For the most part, I think the durability of the UA TriBase Reign 5, Reign 4, and Regin Vital is pretty consistent in most settings. I think if you’re using these shoes for recreational lifting, then all three of these models will last you for quite some time. When it comes to lifting, the TriBase Reign 5, 4, and Vital all perform strongly regarding stability when managing different weights. If your main goal is strength training in these shoes, then you should be set in any of these models. Since the TriBase Reign 5 is designed for a variety of training settings, I wanted to push their performance in different contexts so you can cross-reference how you train with their performance. All in all, I think the Under Armour TriBase Reign did an okay job in its performance and construction assessment. I think the shoe itself is far from perfect in regards to its construction potential, but it definitely has a lot of things going for it. In respects to performance, I was a little surprised at how well this model held its own. It didn’t perform up to the standards of a weathered cross trainer, but it came out of the gates swinging and I tip my hat to Under Armour for this first cross training pass. The upper is an awesome blend of comfort and breathability. It felt homey with its padding, yet also refreshing with the airflow it provides, making it a great companion for indoor workouts too.

This shoe is brand new, so it’s really tough to provide a lot of information about the durability that comes along with this model. What I can do is provide objective thoughts on the construction and activities performed in this shoe that extend off other models I’ve tried. I think the outer construction will hold up just fine with the ripstop material, and the outsole has a strong pretty rubber that doesn’t feel like it will peel off easily. My only real durability concern has to do with the thinner low-cut heel maintaining its stable nature over long periods of time. UA TriBase Reign Durability UA TriBase Reign Price For example, a lot of lifters and athletes will use this shoe for functional fitness which entails a high volume of jumping rope, and more specifically double-unders. I also like how versatile the Haze Trainer is and how it can work for lifting, CrossFit, athletic-style sessions, and daily wear. In fact, the Haze Trainer is typically my go-to travel shoe when I can only bring one model with me.In the context of CrossFit, the TriBase Reign 5 did a pretty good job. These shoes felt super similar to the TriBase Reign 4s so if you’re familiar with that model and use them currently for CrossFit, then you should enjoy the 5s as well. For short runs programmed in WODs and for shorter interval runs, I like the UA TriBase Reign 5 and it should be comfortable enough for these running contexts. The Micro G Foam midsole’s density has good energy return for faster forefoot-biased running settings.
