About this deal

Air coolers use cold water or ice to cool the air, but air conditioners use cooling gas; both use fans to spread the air around the room. Multiply the dimensions (in feet) of the room by five. So for a room measuring 15ft x 10ft x 8ft, you would calculate 15 x 10 x 8 x 5 = an air conditioner of 6,000 BTUs. They are generally heavy, unwieldy appliances. If you have reduced strength and/or live alone, you might need to get someone to help you set it up. Sadly, the unit doesn’t really allow you to open the window as advertised — unless you rip off all the insulation foam. At least you can still enjoy the view through the window. All costs includes parts, labour, call out and delivery charges are covered, so you can rest assured there are no hidden costs. For smaller untis we may ask you to return it to our UK repair centre.

As a unique feature, you can activate the MAX mode (all upper-case is appropriate) with the display-equipped remote control. Cooling the living room and the kitchen as one consolidated space is a much easier proposition. Until this summer, I haven’t minded having a hot kitchen. But with the need to work from home now, it would be a huge benefit to have another fully habitable room. I tested the unit over a couple of humid days in my home office and bedroom, both of which measure around 26m2, the upper volume limit for the unit. Weighing in at 23.5kg it is – just – possible to get the unit up a flight of stairs single-handed, but nul points to Meaco for the shallow finger-grips.Example: If you have a 500 sq ft sun cabin near Texas with many glass windows, you should be looking at 10,000 BTU air conditioners (as recommended). It would be best if you were looking at 14,000 BTU portable air conditioners, for example. What Does BTU Mean In Air Conditioners (Summary) Getting the AEG unit set up was easy (except for the bit where we carried it from the street to the apartment; at 30kg it's very heavy!). Leading brands like AEG, De'Longhi and LG are all well-known for delivering excellent cooling results and have serious authority in the appliance world. I have a complicated air conditioning situation. I live in southwest Missouri, with a hot, humid climate in the summer. The house, which I grew up in, is a one-and-a-half-story 1920s Craftsman-style house (not true Craftsman), with central air. Like my father, I keep the door at the bottom of the stairs closed to save on utilities. The upstairs consists of two bedrooms, which are divided by a hallway, which gives onto a stairwell from the gabled landing. The ceilings measure 7’3/4″ at their highest (in the two bedrooms, there are sloping ceilings on either side). The bedroom doors face each other, and the two windows in the south bedroom more or less face the single window in the north one.

The living room unit is 6,500 BTU and the bedroom unit is 6,000 BTU. I use them only for those rooms. The BTUs are more than adequate for the spaces, but the units are too old to work properly and need to be replaced. If you will only be using your air conditioner occasionally, or if you want to be able to move it from room to room, a portable air conditioner is the wiser choice. However there are good reasons for choosing wall-mounted air conditioners. The same goes for sun exposure. If the room or area you’re looking to cool down is generally facing the sun, you will need a bigger air conditioner. The BTU calculator and chart work best for standard room height. Obviously, if you have a tall ceiling (older buildings have +10 ft ceilings), you have to add a bit of cooling power in BTU. Our data shows that they use as much energy in an hour as a typical fridge freezer uses in one day. Thanks to its auto-evaporative functionality, the air conditioner recycles condensation water to cool itself. There’s rarely a need to drain it unless you live in an extremely humid area.

I wanted to follow on from an earlier question where you advised the extra 4000BTU is not necessary if you are not an active user of the kitchen. I’m the same way and on balance would probably rather deal with the cooling maybe not being as effective for the 45 minutes every other day I am running my oven or using the stove, than step up the BTU and have higher energy usage the other 47 hours and 15 minutes.

How much does an air conditioner cost?

As I’ve never had a/c it’s hard for me to imagine one handler cooling several rooms, even with the appropriate btu’s for square footage, thank you for your help! Reply Midea U also features a sleep mode and energy saver mode — if you want it to consume even less power than normal.

Finally, air coolers tend to be cheaper, but the best air conditioning units should last you for years, seeing you through many UK summers. Where to buy portable air conditioners in the UK You can use a vacuum cleaner for cleaning the access panels and filters - ideally using the soft brush attachment to remove dust balls and debris that's gathered in the unit. Now, the key question is how much bigger AC unit can I buy and still avoid ‘cold but humid’ conditions due to oversized AC. Truth be told, that’s really hard to show for sure. The rough consensus (a rule of thumb if you will) is that AC shouldn’t have 30-40% surplus cooling output. Example: If you need a 10,000 BTU unit, buying a 14,000 BTU unit is a bad idea (you will have humidity problems). Portable air conditioning units are far cheaper than investing in getting central air conditioning installed, and far easier to get up and running.Appearance-wise, the device is compact, measuring just 20 x 20 x 25cm and we love that the unit sat neatly on our desk without being too much of an eyesore, while the LED light is a lovely touch and there are a selection of colours to choose between. Key specs – BTU rating: 9,000; Functions: AC, dehumidifier, heater, fan; Energy rating: A; Noise: 64dB; Features: Remote control, timer, three-speed fan, heat pump; Hose length: 1.5m; Dimensions: 705 x 472 x 383mm; Weight: 31kg to 34kg The trendy portable air conditioners, for example, have a cooling capacity of 6,000 BTU to 14,000 BTU. According to Go Downsize, the average size of studio apartments in the US is about 500 sq ft. That means that for a small apartment, you don’t need expensive central air conditioning. You can install an average-sized 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner, which will save you tons of money. Obviously, the relatively low BTU rating puts it out of contention for larger rooms, let alone open-plan living spaces, but for the average UK living room or bedroom it should be fine. You can control it using the top-mounted touch controls or bundled remote, and there’s a 24-hour stop/start timer to cool your bedroom before you go to sleep. The only problem is that most users describe it as “pretty noisy”. You might not want to leave this one running overnight. As far as I can tell, based on square footage alone I would be looking for a 5000 btu unit, but I am wondering if 6000 might be better given the location of the room and those additional factors. I definitely do not want to cause moisture issues by getting too big a unit, but do not want to undersize and have a unit not work either.
