But to this day, despite what I consider a very high grit level, there are still rounds where I have to struggle to stay engaged.

My New Book Is Out! - Practical Golf

My personality off the course could rightly be said to be quite different from my personality on the course. It is not a swing instruction book nor a golf physiology book although elements of both of these are referred to in the chapters. Jon accomplishes exactly what he set out to do with his writing, which is to 1) spell things out clearly with little room for interpretation and 2) communicate in a simple and straightforward manner. The Practice section is the most "difficult" to read but we all know that practice isn't always easy and we need to persevere. And I believe on those days, it’s where you have your best chance to grow your grit and solidify these habits. A lot of it has to do with how challenging the game is and how good it feels to have those moments where we think we figured it out.

One of the other books on my reading list is "The Practice Manual" by Adam Young so this is a good introduction to that. The focus on how to improve your game without offering swing advice is an approach that can help a lot of players who are caught in an unending cycle of terrible quick tips from golf magazines and youtube instruction. You can finally get all of the methods he’s used to become a scratch golfer and coach other golfers in one complete guide. This is where Captain Sensible needs to come into his own again and remind me of my personal limitations before trying to draw a high 3 wood over the trees on 16 at Ladybank when I've been hitting a fade all day. Our new video Masterclass allows you to consume all the advice from the book more efficiently and in less time.

As I kept slowly chipping away and celebrating my tiny accomplishments, I was also proving my new identity. It probably works best as the video version Sherman references, middle as a print book with all the references available, and third as an audio. He discusses the value of this concept, and also of building an effective Post-Shot Routine, for golfers who want to improve any part of their games. The rounds I have gotten the most pleasure from are probably not the ones where I had the lowest scores, but the ones where I've managed to get over a couple of poor holes and still posted a decent score.

I’ve played with successful business people, professional athletes, and plenty of other high achievers who undoubtedly have serious grit. I have been friends with Jon for years and have watched him evolve into one of the top voices in game improvement. Sherman focuses on adjusting expectations, course management, and more mental game vs technical instruction. Unsurprisingly, as co-hosts of an excellent podcast together titled The Sweet Spot, their philosophies to golf improvement and practice are quite similar.

There's nothing revelatory in it and you may have read a lot of similar things in other books, but it brings it all together into one easy-to-access volume. In the book, Jon quotes a wonderful James Clear (Atomic Habits book) statement – “The key to building lasting habits is focusing on creating a new identity first. Unlike a book or video that explains complex swing techniques, these simple concepts are easily applied. Instead, he approaches golf from a player's perspective, with a singular goal: To help you play better golf the next time you tee it up.Whenever I mention words like grit, resiliency, or grinding it out, inevitably, I get the response, “well, that doesn’t sound like much fun! The chapters around managing expectations were particularly helpful to me, using Strokes Gained understanding. And much, much more Finally, you will no longer have to feel like you are lost and alone in your golf game.
